Saint Peter & Nelson Mandela

To finish this series of posts about Nelson Mandela, I now share with you a cartoon I came across at the English Blog. As usual, the cartoon is followed by some useful information, in case you want to use it in class.

BACKGROUND
When a soul arrives at the gates of heaven, Saint Peter, the gatekeeper, will look through the Book of Life. If your name is in the Book of Life, you may enter.
THE CARTOON
This cartoon by Chappatte from Le Temps, Geneva shows Saint Peter at the gates of heaven. Attached to the railings behind is a picture of him with a smiling Nelson Mandela, who has signed the picture.
EXPLANATION
Nelson Mandela has died and gone to heaven. We are meant to assume that since Mandela was such a special person, Saint Peter wanted to have a souvenir photograph taken with him, just like members of the public do with celebrities.
NOTES
In art (and cartoons), St Peter is usually depicted as a white-haired, bearded man in a blue robe, often holding a key or keys, which refer to Matthew 16:19. Following on from this, many paintings and literary accounts of Heaven show him stationed at the gate. There are traditionally two keys, one gold and one silver, representing the two conditions necessary for salvation: the silver key represents repentance, which comes from the person concerned; and the gold key represents forgiveness, which comes from God.

Traffic jam

Do you know the meaning of 'traffic jam'? A monolingual dictionary is very useful when you come across an idiomatic expression. Urban dictionary is one of my favourite translation tools, as it clearly explains each expression in context, and is continuously updated. Cartoons might also be wonderful resources to introduce vocabulary, as the one below by Brian Zaikowski

Global warming, please!...

Winter is definitely and roughly amongst us. So here follows a cartoon by Rick McKee, which could also be a resource to use in a lesson about Global Warming, either to introduce or close the topic!

An announced royal baby

Bob Englehart, from The Hartford Courant, wrote on December, 4th 2012, as I quote: 'Nothing like a new baby on the way to spark paternal and maternal instincts across the globe. The fact that it's being born into the royal family makes it even better. It allows each and every one of us to feel like an aunt, uncle or cousin. Distant maybe, but still involved in an emotional way. We all wish Kate good health and a successful birth because that's what she's chosen. Those of us of a certain age remember like it was yesterday when this baby's father and uncle were born. They were cute little kids and now they're handsome men. There are plenty people alive who remember when this baby's grandfather was born, too.' Due to a severe pregnancy sickness, the Duchess had to receive hospital treatment. Fortunately, she has been discharged from hospital after a three-night stay and has told reporters that she is feeling much better, reports The Telegraph. You can read the full news HERE.

The cartoon above, also by Bob Englehart, is about the announcement made this week related to the Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy. The cartoon is a comment on the media frenzy surrounding the news on the fact that the Duchess is expecting a baby. The bird which is delivering the royal baby (and being followed by the major U.S. news channels) is a stork. For centuries the stork has been a symbol representing birth, and children were told that babies arrive carried by a stork. If you have ever wondered why a white stork was chosen for this honour, wiseGEEK has an explanation which you can read HERE. I came across this information through The English Blog.
