Just a year out... hopefully

CC is an Arts teacher at my school. She won´t be joining us next year as she's about to embrace a new career challenge. It's been twelve years since we first met! It's hard to imagine school without her. She'll be deeply missed...

Dove Real Beauty Sketches

When I first saw this video, I thought of some of my 10th/11th form female students who lack so much self-esteem. I think this video could be an approach to the topic, especially in the 10th form, as 'Being a teenager today' is one of the issues that I'm currently talking about in class. Then, and to lighten up the atmosphere, showing them this Dove beauty ad spoof would be a funny way to end such a painful topic!

Images of our beautiful world

I'm sure you'll find the best way to use these pictures in class. Either to talk about environment, or our multicultural world, they're so fresh and appealing that, simply by showing them, you'll get a reaction from your students. Especially from your visual learning students. Click HERE to view all the images and the text that follows them.

#Epic selfie around the world

What a fantastic video to use in class when talking about 'The Multicultural World'! Why not ask your students to try to identify the 36 countries where the guy in the video has taken such fantastic selfies? I'm sure enthusiasm, and a little bit of jealousy, will spread along the class and you'll have fantastic moments of interaction with your students, especially if they are privileged enough to have already traveled around some countries!...
To contextualize the adventure, you might like to take a look at this interview with Alex Chacon, the lucky globe trekker, for CBS, or look into Chacon's blog The Modern Motorcycle Diaries, which has fantastic pictures of this beautiful planet!

If I should have a daughter...

'If I should have a daughter, instead of Mom, she's gonna call me Point B ... ' began spoken word poet Sarah Kay, in a talk that inspired two standing ovations at TED2011. She tells the story of her metamorphosis - from a wide-eyed teenager soaking in verse at New York's Bowery Poetry Club to a teacher connecting kids with the power of self-expression through Project V.O.I.C.E. - and gives two breathtaking performances of 'B' and 'Hiroshima.' This talk was presented at an official TED conference, and was featured by our editors on the home page.

The 28th APPI Conference

I will be attending the 28th Conference APPI for the next three days at the Sheraton Hotel in O'Porto. This year's conference is entitled 'Language & Culture - encourage, engage, empower'. In three days, delegates can make the most of the presentations and the socializing bit by participating in the conference dinner party. In addition, two pedagogical theatre shows may prove inspiring to planning our teaching, I'm so eager to listen to the speakers and meet so many fellow workers from across the country that I only get in touch with in venues like these! I'm sure it will be a great conference! See you in a couple of days!

Nike Commercial 2014

Football and commercials are best friends, and a great tool to use in class. Nearly every kid loves football. Football players are amongst their idols as well, so this commercial might be a great tool to boost their urge to speak. After all, the world football championship is only two months ahead.

World Book and Copyright Day 2014

April 23 marks the anniversary of the birth or death of a range of well-known writers, including Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Maurice Druon, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Haldor Kiljan Laxness, Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and William Shakespeare. For this reason, UNESCO's General Conference chose this date to pay tribute to books, the authors who wrote them, and the copyright laws that protect them.

A range of activities to promote reading and the cultural aspects of books are held all over the world. Many of these emphasize international cooperation or friendships between countries. Events include: relay readings of books and plays; the distribution of bookmarks; the announcement of the winners of literary competitions; and actions to promote the understanding of laws on copyright and the protection of authors' intellectual property.

In some years, the Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance is awarded. This is a prize for novels, collections of short stories or picture books that promote tolerance, peace, mutual understanding and respect for other peoples and cultures. There are two categories: one for books aimed at children aged up to 12 years; and one for those aimed at young people aged 13 to 18 years.

#Global Selfie for Earth Day

Today is Earth Day and NASA is asking us something very special: take a selfie, post it online and NASA will use it to create a mosaic image of Earth. This is how it works:

'NASA today is asking fans to submit their photos for the agency's Earth Day #GlobalSelfie effort. NASA has plenty of satellite images of our planet taken high above the Earth, but "for Earth Day we are trying to create an image of Earth from the ground up while also fostering a collection of portraits of the people of Earth." "Get outside and show us mountains, parks, the sky, rivers, lakes - wherever you are, there's your picture," NASA said. Spell out where you are using rocks, sand, or a print-out from NASA's website, which is available in several languages. Post your photo to Twitter, Instagram, or Google+ using the hashtag #GlobalSelfie, or post it to the #GlobalSelfie event page on Facebook or the #GlobalSelfie group on Flickr. Once the images are collected, NASA will "create a mosaic image of Earth - a new 'Blue Marble' built bit by bit with your photos."
"NASA scientists have helped identify thousands of new planets out in the universe in recent years. But the space agency studies no planet more closely than our own," the agency said. "On this Earth Day, we wanted to create a different picture of our planet - a crowd-sourced collection of snapshots of the people of Earth that we could use to create one unique mosaic of the Blue Marble." Happy Easter

Now that the assessment week is over and it is time for a break, I'm going to enjoy a few days to indulge in some free time and recharge energies. Spending quality time with my family will surely foster my stamina to face the last term of this school year. In the meantime, I wish you all a great Easter.
